Francisco Pinto Balsemão holds a degree in Law from the University of Lisbon and he started his career in newspaper publishing. After working as a journalist, and then as an administrator of Diário Popular, he founded the Expresso newspaper in 1973. Additionally, in 1992, he was the founder of SIC, the first Portuguese private television network. Currently he is a major shareholder at Impresa group and serves as Chairman of the European Publishers Council.

In politics, Pinto Balsemão started as a Member of Parliament before the revolution. After that, he helped found PSD, and from 1981 to 1983 he served as Prime Minister of Portugal. Currently, he is a member of the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group.
